How to use eCommerce to do business transactions

Traditionally, SMEs could use the standard eCommerce portals, but it’s not an optimal solution. Now it is possible for SMEs to build their own eshops by using some easy-to-use open-source (free) eCommerce system at a more cost-effective manner with the following merits:

  1. Freedom in branding and design
  2. Freedom in customer relationship building and management.
  3. Freedom in marketing and publicity e.g. through social media, Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
  4. Freedom in distinguishing their products from the generally low-cost, low-quality, or even counterfeiting ones in common eCommerce portals

This project is to enable SMEs to build and use the open-source eCommerce system through seminars, hands-on workshops, trade expos, easy-to-use eCommerce system handbook, project Website, eCommerce site competition, experience sharing and hot-line/consulting. A review on the market reveals that there are no similar offerings apart from general awareness seminars or workshops, or specialized, technical and expensive training on non-open-source eCommerce systems which are not tailored for SMEs.

Since this project emphasises on practicality and should not just stay at the conceptual level, we have selected a leading open source and free-of-charge eCommerce package, Magento, as the major recommendation. We have also introduced how Joomla (the CMS used in workshops of the project "To promote the application of Web Content Management System (CMS) to local SMEs") could be extended for eCommerce purpose. In this project, the essential functionalities of eCommerce have been covered and mastered by the SMEs, including product listing, shopping carts, customers’ shopping history, transactions handling, interfacing to a trustworthy payment gateway, etc.
